Michael Collins Commemoration – Sunday 21st

To mark the centenary of his passing we will gather to honour his life and that of his fiancée Kitty Kiernan of Granard.

It’s exciting times as the original handwritten letters exchanged between them are set to return to Granard on the day, with thanks to Dan Breen, Curator of Cork County Museum.

The letters will be on display alongside the beautiful pocket watch, Michael gifted to Kitty on their engagement along with other items in our pop up exhibition with thanks to Longford Historical Society.

Outside Knights and Conquests, we’ll have the Ford Model T that Michael travelled in, which was owned by Larry Kiernan, brother of Kitty. We’re delighted to be welcoming Lord Edward’s Own Living History Group & The High Nelly Club to Knights and Conquests on the day.

To mark this significant day, we’re very grateful to members of the Defence Forces, who will form a Colour Party, followed by a marching body of O.N.E members, Irish Volunteers & Clonfin Volunteers. Living history actors, Reenactors in uniform/1920’s dress & the High Nelly Club.

From the site of the old Barracks (Garda Station) we’ll pass the Greville Arms Hotel, (1 minute silence at hotel) passing Finnegans – where he once delivered a rousing speech and onto the heritage centre.

For those who want to watch parade:
We’ll be marching through the town at 2.45pm approx to the Knights and Conquests Heritage Centre.

Join us….

Flag Raising Ceremony at 3pm at Knights and Conquests Heritage Centre. All welcome.
